Overview
SULU is a modern, Asian inspired restaurant in downtown Saskatoon focused on skewers, sushi, bao buns, house-made dumplings, fried items and mains. We are looking for a hands-on chef and leader who can drive consistency, lead service, develop a team and help shape the next stages of our kitchen.
This role is ideal for someone who combines solid cooking fundamentals, leadership, organization with a genuine passion for Asian cuisine.
We are looking for someone with extensive restaurant and kitchen experience and a passion for food excellence. As Head Chef, you will oversee all aspects of kitchen operations, ensure food safety standards are maintained and inspire your team to create innovative and high-quality dishes. This position offers an exciting opportunity to manage a vibrant food service environment and help shape a growing enterprise.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead day to day kitchen operations and service
- Maintain high standards for food quality, consistency, presentation, cleanliness and organization
- Hire, train, mentor and support kitchen staff
- Work with management/ownership on menu execution, features and future development
- Build and maintain kitchen systems including recipes, prep lists, station standards and pars
- Manage ordering, inventory, product rotation and waste control
- Monitor and improve food cost and labour efficiency
- Ensure compliance with food safety and sanitation standards
- Lead by example during prep, service and busy shifts
- Collaborate with front-of-house staff to ensure seamless service delivery
- Monitor staff performance, provide feedback, and foster a positive team environment
- Stay updated on industry trends to continually improve culinary offerings
Qualifications
- 5+ years of professional kitchen experience
- 2+ years in a leadership role (Sous Chef, Head Chef, Chef De Cuisine, Kitchen Manager or similar)
- Strong experience in Asian cooking, or a serious interest and commitment to learning and growing in Asian cuisine
- Graduate of a recognized culinary/post-secondary culinary program is an asset but not required with the right experience
- Experience with ordering, inventory, food cost control and kitchen organization
- Strong leadership, communication and problem solving skills
- Calm and dependable in a quick paced environment
- Commitment to high standards and continuous improvement
- Food Safe Certification (or willingness to obtain promptly)
- Cantonese or Mandarin Language is an asset, but not required

- Recipe Documentation and kitchen systems
