Position summary
The Hul'q'umi'num' Language Instructor Apprentice (HLNIA) is responsible for teaching and promoting the Hul'q'umi'num' language in Indigenous school settings. The HLNIA will promote the development and delivery of culturally grounded language lessons that foster fluency, pride, and connection to culture among Indigenous students.
The position
The Hulq'umi'num' Language Nest Instructor Apprentice (HLNIA), as with all staff working at SES focus is on student supports and needs first. Tasks include but are not limited to the following:
- Teach Hul'q'umi'num' to students in a language nest setting.
- Develop engaging and culturally relevant lessons that align with curriculum and language revitalization goals.
- Integrate storytelling, songs, land-based learning, and traditional practices into language instruction.
- Assess participants progress and provide feedback and support for continued learning.
- Create and adapt lesson plans, resources, and activities suitable for early year age groups and fluency levels to include parents.
- Collaborate with other language teachers and curriculum developers to align with Indigenous education frameworks and provincial standards.
- Incorporate guidance from Elders and fluent speakers to ensure cultural and linguistic integrity
- Work in partnership with Elders and Knowledge Keepers to co-teach and support authentic learning experiences.
- Promote the daily use of Hul'q'umi'num' in through signage, greetings, ceremonies, and events.
- Support school-wide initiatives related to Indigenous language and culture.
- Participate in school and community events that celebrate and support language and cultural revitalization.
- Engage in ongoing professional learning related to language teaching, Indigenous pedagogy, and language revitalization strategies.
- Complete participant reports after each terms
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the direct supervisor to support the goals of the Hul'q'umi'num' language programs.
What you bring
- Completion of coursework or a certificate in Indigenous Language Revitalization, or Indigenous Education, or Teaching certification (BC Ministry of Education or equivalent), or an Indigenous Language Teaching Certificate.
- Experience developing culturally relevant curriculum or language immersion programs.
- mid or high proficiency in Hul'q'umi'num' (spoken and, if possible, written) preferred.
- Experience teaching or working with children and youth, preferably in an Indigenous or Language-based and/or school setting.
- Deep respect for and understanding of Indigenous ways of knowing, being, and teaching.
- Ability to work collaboratively with community members and school staff.
- Awareness of Trauma informed wellness for self and others
- Ability to pass Criminal Records Check for working with Vulnerable Persons
