Job Summary:
Approaches to Community Wellbeing (ACW) is a regional resource to 31 First Nations communities. ACW provides expertise, support, services, and programming in public health to the region. The program also supports communities in the development, implementation, and monitoring of their own Approaches to Community Wellbeing. The Raising our Children section of the model includes Family Health, Youth Development, and Building Healthy Relationships. The Building Healthy Relationships part of the model supports The Warriors of Change: Transforming Men, Strengthening Communities project. This project aims to empower Indigenous men and reduce gender-based violence (GBV) by promoting personal growth, healthy relationships, education on gender-based violence, and personal skills development. The role will focus on cultivating leadership, kindness, and the promotion of positive, healthy relationships.
The Promoter â Healthy Relationships will work with the Family Health and Youth Development teams to provide support to community-based workers and enhance community health services through training programs designed to foster family balance, strengthen self-worth, and improve employability and social connections among Indigenous men.
The Promoter â Healthy Relationships is directly accountable to the Manager - Raising Our Children.
Qualifications:
- Persons of First Nations ancestry will be given preference (OHRC, Part II, Special Employment)
- Diploma in social work or health related field
- Two yearsâ work experience in public health and/or in the field of gender-based violence
- Experience in program planning, implementation, and evaluation
- Experience in working with First Nation communities, especially with men and youth
- Excellent communication skills, i.e., listening, oral, and written English skills, public speaking, making presentations
- Solid interpersonal skills
- Excellent keyboarding skills, able to use computer programs for word processing, spreadsheets, graphics, and use other office equipment
- Willing to travel
- Valid Ontario Class G driverâs license, along with regular access to a vehicle
- Ability to perform the requirements of the role on a regular basis
Roles and Responsibilities:
1. Provide support in engaging men to the Raising Our Children team and to community health care and social service providers.
2. Participate in the development, implementation, evaluation, and quarterly reporting of the Raising Our Children work plan.
3. Identify health issues, GBV-related concerns, and other social challenges affecting men in community, and participate in the development and evaluation of education materials related to the Warriors of Change project.
4. Provide support for health promotion activities for the Raising Our Children program.
5. Provide orientation on SLFNHAâs Approaches to Community Wellbeing department and the Raising our Children team to community health care and social service providers to develop program awareness, and facilitate continued learning opportunities for community workers around promoting and supporting menâs involvement in leadership roles and GBV prevention.
6. Conduct environmental scan to determine community needs and existing programs related to menâs education, leadership and gender-based violence prevention.
7. Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate menâs wellbeing, leadership, and non-violence programs and community-based initiatives.
8. Develop and deliver an education program designed to increase the understanding of GBV awareness, healthy relationships, and leadership.
9. Build relationships and leadership capacity of men and community workers through:
1. Developing and providing resources on the promotion of healthy relationships
2. Acting as a mentor for men in leadership and those aspiring to leadership roles
3. Providing training
4. Conducting workshops
5. Facilitating the development of a network of men working to address GBV
- Actively participate in committees and other working groups as a representative for SLFNHA
- Perform other duties for SLFNHA as directed.
