Research Lab Technician, Chemical & Petroleum Engineering (Northwest Calgary)

Description
Chemical & Petroleum Engineering in the Schulich School of Engineering invites applications for a Research Lab Technician. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months.
The Research Lab Technician reports to the Lab Manager, and works closely with the Department Head/Research Committee as well as Principal Investigators (PIs), within Chemical and Petroleum Engineering. The incumbent will exercise wide latitude in determining objectives and approaches to critical assignments
This is a fixed term full-time position (35 hours/week) with normal work hours, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., although some overtime may be required.
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
- Manages shared laboratory assets including the scheduling of equipment for use by suitably trained persons.
- Advises researchers on the appropriate instrument or testing conditions for research samples, and on the interpretation of characterization and analysis data.
- Oversees and contributes to the preparation and maintenance of equipment for laboratory work, including set-up, calibration and servicing, in coordination with external repair or replacement vendors.
- Manages a budget for maintenance and repair of equipment. For unforeseen repairs or replacements that exceed the budget, prepares and submits proposals for consideration.
- Advises researchers on the appropriate instrument or testing conditions for research samples, and on the interpretation of characterization and analysis data.
- Carries out laboratory analysis, using appropriate instruments and operating conditions, samples should be prepared and applied to the instrument using the appropriate standard operating procedures.
- Demonstrates and trains others on experimental techniques and the operation of specialized laboratory equipment to ensure the equipment is operated in a secure and sustainable fashion.
- Ensures smooth, continuous operation of the laboratory including supervision of graduate students.
- Maintains and organizes laboratory supplies and is responsible for the proper storage of materials and the appropriate disposal of waste.
- Contributes to collaborative decisions with researchers regarding the purchase of new capital equipment.
- Manages billing for fee-for-service work.
Qualifications / Requirements:
- A diploma or bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering or Chemistry.
- A minimum of 3 years of experience in a research laboratory environment.
- Must possess an excellent working knowledge of laboratory testing and analysis techniques using most or all of the following methods:
- Inductively Coupled Plasma - Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES)
- Dynamic Light Scattering (zetasizer)
- Laser Diffraction Particle size analysis
- High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC)
- Thermo-Gravimetric Analysis (TGA)
- Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis
- UV-Vis Spectroscopy
- Ion Chromatography (IC)
- Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot, debug and repair chemical analysis instruments.
- Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills, frequently reporting/updating others on information including any issues that may arise.
- Demonstrated excellent interpersonal relations skills, sound judgment and ability to foster a cooperative work environment.
- Demonstrated organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects and priorities effectively.
- The incumbent must be self-motivated after initial supervision, willing to learn new experimental skills, and to work individually
