Job Information
Located within the Inuvik Regional Hospital and reporting directly to the Manager, Acute Care, the Obstetric Registered Nurse (Obstetric RN) on Acute Care is one of the Registered Nurses (RN) and Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN) providing culturally sensitive care to patients of the 14-bed Acute Care unit 24 hours a day year-round. The Inuvik Regional Hospital provides birthing services and, therefore, must always have one obstetric trained registered nurse staffed every shift 24 hours a day year-round to provide protected obstetrical services and to minimize any risks. Every registered nurse on Acute Care may be required to act as the responsibility nurse (charge nurse) depending on staff make up and experience of the staff on duty during a particular shift. The RN OBS also works as an acute care nurse, who cares for patients across the lifespan and medical conditions when there are insufficient obstetrical patients to care for. When obstetrical care is required, the RN will re-assign their medical patients to a team member and take primary assignment of the obstetrical patient.
Key Responsibilities
- The Obstetrics RN have advanced obstetrical knowledge of an ability to apply standardized nursing processes (assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation) and current nursing practice to ensure that the obstetrical patients' physical emotional, psychosocial, spiritual, educational needs are met.
- The Obstetrics RN must also have knowledge of an ability to apply standardized nursing processes (assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation) and current nursing practice to ensure that the adult/pediatric patients' physical, emotional, psychosocial, spiritual, educational and daily living needs are met.
- As all disease processes are admitted to the Acute Care Unit the Registered Nurse must be up to date with disease processes, treatment and assessment.
- An ability to educate patients and their families (where applicable) on appropriate selfcare methods and techniques.
- The RN must have relevant acute care skills to provide patient care to a non OBS patient group, as required.
- Knowledge of biological, physical and behavioral sciences in order to recognize, interpret, and prioritize findings and determine and implement a plan of action based on accepted standards of practice.
Key qualifications
- Completion of a Nursing degree
- One-year recent experience on an obstetrical unit
- Experience in an acute care setting required
- The completion of a Perinatal Certificate is also an asset.
