Our health centre is responsible for providing health and social services to our community members within a timely manner, as well as working alongside external partners such as Island Health, First Nations Health Authority, etc.
POSITION OVERVIEW
Reporting to the Health Director, the Spiritual Counsellor provides individual and group counselling sessions focused on restoring wellness through connection to culture, community, and land. This position plays a key role in helping participants reconnect to their culture, identity and healing journey by blending Indigenous land-based practices with elements of Western therapeutic approaches.
The Spiritual Counsellor works collaboratively with the Clinical Counsellors and program team to co-create a trauma-informed, culturally grounded environment that supports χʷɛmaɬkʷu (Homalco) members recovery and personal growth.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Therapeutic Services
- Deliver individual and group counselling sessions for participants focused on emotional regulation, wellness, life skills, and recovery.
- Integrate appropriate cultural and land-based healing methods (e.g., ceremony, storytelling, drumming, teachings, gardening, arts, cedar brushing, water or forest connection, etc.) into therapeutic work.
- Support participants in developing personal wellness and recovery plans, ensuring cultural safety and self-determination.
- Conduct case management and follow-ups, maintaining consistent contact and monitoring participant progress.
- Facilitate or co-facilitate mental health and addiction recovery workshops grounded in both traditional teachings and modern therapeutic principles.
Program Development & Collaboration
- Work collaboratively with the Clinical Counsellor and team to design, implement, and evaluate therapeutic activities, group sessions, and healing circles.
- Contribute to the development of program tools, protocols, and procedures related to counselling and land-based therapy.
- Participate in weekly team meetings, supervision, and case reviews, providing input from a cultural and holistic healing perspective.
- Build and maintain relationships with χʷɛmaɬkwu (Homalco) community members, staff, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and external partners to support cultural continuity and collaboration.
Documentation & Professional Standards
- Maintain accurate participant records, case notes, and confidentiality in alignment with clinical and ethical standards.
- Track participant attendance, engagement, and wellbeing outcomes through program assessment tools.
- Demonstrate ongoing professional development and self-care practices, respecting the emotional and spiritual demands of the role.
EDUCATION LICENSES & EXPERIENCE
- Experience providing counselling or healing work in Indigenous communities.
- Knowledge of traditional healing, ceremony, and Indigenous wellness frameworks.
- Familiarity with trauma-informed and harm-reduction principles.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team blending Western and Indigenous approaches.
- Strong communication, empathy, and facilitation skills.
LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS
- Valid BC Class 5 Driver’s License
- Valid First Aid certificate.
- Ability to provide and maintain a clear vulnerable sector criminal record check.
