PROGRAM SUMMARY:
The English Language and Multicultural Services (ELMS) Program empowers newcomers to Canada to live full lives in our community. The program offers free multi-level English classes, volunteer tutor matching, information and orientation, community connection services, employment services, and cultural learning activities. The service utilizes learner-centered approaches to teach and introduce newcomers to Canadian culture and resources, to connect them with the community and to strengthen English speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. A welcoming and supportive community is built through shared intercultural experiences.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Digital Navigator supports newcomers to Canada by providing essential digital skills training and assisting clients in accessing online settlement services and trainings. This role involves guiding clients in using digital tools, offering one-on-one or group training, and ensuring access to digital devices for those in need.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:
- Reports To: ELMS Program Manager
- Direct Reports: None
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develop and offer one-on-one or group training to help newcomers gain the digital literacy needed to access online settlement services and resources.
- Guide clients in navigating and utilizing online training and service platforms and tools effectively.
- Manage the loan and distribution of digital devices to eligible clients who lack access, ensuring they can participate in settlement services.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Post-secondary education in a related field, such as Information Technology, Communications, Education, Social Services, or a similar discipline.
- Must work well with people and demonstrate knowledge of the challenges that may be part of immigrant settlement in Canada.
- Demonstrated record of working with diverse populations.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Proficiency in common digital tools and platforms, including the ability to assist clients with navigating websites, email, online forms, and video conferencing tools.
- Cultural sensitivity and awareness to work with diverse populations, including those from various linguistic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
- Ability to maintain a personable and professional attitude that ensures clients feel valued, respected, and comfortable seeking support.
- Robust communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to explain complex concepts in simple terms.
- Patience and empathy, especially when working with clients who may have limited digital skills or English proficiency.
- Organizational skills to manage training sessions, device distribution, and follow-up support efficiently.
- Be self-directed and able to work well independently and as part of a team.
