La Movida Sewing & Design Studio is looking for talent!
We are currently seeking a creative, motivated and positive part-time sewing instructor to primarily teach our youth students (ages 8+) and some introductory adult classes. Our quickly growing business offers a lot of opportunity for growth.
La Movidaâs instructional style has been designed to make sewing for the absolute beginner, to the very experienced sewer, easy and fun. Our classes are for kids 8+ and adults, with the majority of instruction for children and teens. As a La Movida Instructor you will be trained in our dynamic instructional style at our Kitsilano studio.
This position requires, but is not limited to the following:
- Opening and closing the studio
- A customer service focused mentality. We teach students from ages 8 and up, and it is imperative to create an exceptional guest experience. Being comfortable with leading, instructing and conversing with students, parents, and families from all different skill levels and backgrounds are key to this position.
- Make alterations to patterns for individual studentâs fit
- Sew samples accurately
- Aiding customers and students alike to find the correct fabric for each project
- Interest in fashion. The ability to keep yourself up to date in current fashion and trends. We create demonstrations, projects and new designs often, input is required and assistance with troubleshooting required.
- Ability to help problem solve sewing issues, make alterations, fix sewing mistakes
- Studio prep, tidying and organization â studio needs to look clean and fully stocked for classes all the time
- Preparing for instruction, taking attendance, and following curriculums. Some tasks will require basic computer skills. Experience with Google Applications is an asset.
- Measuring and cutting fabric
- Ability to work independently and take initiative
- Obtaining a criminal record check, at your cost
Qualifications and Requirements:
- Some experience instructing: we instruct a variety of sewing classes for kids and adults of all skill levels with a minimum of 4 students per class. Class curriculums will be provided.
- Sewing and textile expertise: sewing and basic textile knowledge is a must
- Must have a post secondary diploma in Fashion or have equivalent sewing experience (minimum 5 years of sewing experience.)
- A customer service focused mentality: we pride ourselves on an exceptional experience for both students and customers in the studio.
- Garment construction: robust problem solving skills are a must with the ability to figure out alterations.
- Confident in using, teaching, and troubleshooting sewing machines and sergers.
- Up to date with current fashion trends and have knowledge in the fashion industry, including fashion history.
- An organized multi-tasker: able to juggle organizing studio tasks and meticulous class prep alongside knowing what is going on in the studio at all times.
- Excellent Communication: as an instructor you will not only be interacting with students of all ages, you will also be liaising with customers and our team via email, report cards, phone calls, and in person.
- Basic computer knowledge is an asset
- Have experience pattern drafting and sample making
- Interest in sewing and fashion
- Excellent time management skills and ability to multi-task and prioritize work
- Great attention to detail and problem solving skills
This is a part-time position with an opportunity for full-time opportunity with an average of 20-25 hours per week to start. Must be flexible to work weekends and evenings. We are looking for a permanent, long term employee to join our team! Wage ranging from $20-23 an hour (based on experience), with a performance review after 3 months.
