This role requires 8 weeks of 0.8 FTE (32 hours/week) between July 6th and August 29th 2026.

Funding for this position is provided by Service Canada with emphasis on providing youth summer work experiences which can represent important pathways facilitating future transitions to the workforce. As such, this is a term position ending August 29, 2024. To be eligible, candidates must:

\n
- Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment.
\n
- Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment.
\n
- Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
\n
\nThe MCC Thrift Shop movement was started 50 years ago in Altona, Manitoba. MCCS Thrift Shops seek to be a friendly,caring presence in their community, showing value and respectto all. Practicing and promoting faithful stewardship and care for God’s creation and raising funds for MCC are also key components to the mission statement of the Thrift Shops.\nThe Shop Assistant is accountable to the Manager who will provide direction for the tasks, duties and responsibilities of the Shop Assistant. This is a part-time, term position ending August 29th, 2026.\n
Daily work hours are typically 9:30am – 5:30pm, including various Saturdays per month, with the final schedule determined by the Manager.

- Customer service and sales experience and/or the willingness to learn
\n
- Solid organizational expertise, demonstrated ability to learn procedures, systems and routines
\n
- Accurate attention to detail
\n
- Ability to work flexible hours, including day and weekend shifts within hours of retail operations
\n
- Ability to lift 50 lbs. and exert 11 to 25 lbs. of force frequently
\n
- Requires about 5 or more hours of intermittent standing or walking in a standard workday
\n
- Ability to repeatedly bend or stoop to floor level shelves and able to reach upper shelves with use of a stool or a ladder when necessary
\n
- Written and verbal communication skills within today's technologies
\n
- Self-motivated, able to work independently, and willing to take initiative, while at the same time responding to the direction of the co-managers and management team
\n
- Passionate and enthusiastic about interacting with customers and volunteers; demonstrated interpersonal skills with people of all ages and ethnic backgrounds; friendly and outgoing.
\n
- Satisfactory criminal record check, required

\nKey Responsibilities\nMaintain a high level of integrity, reflecting MCC’s values of peacemaking, respect for all and unconditional love through daily interactions with volunteers, donors and customers.\n
\n
- Follow the MCCS Thrift Shop Mission Statement, and the wishes and directives of the Shop Board, under the guidance of the Manager.
\n
- Communicate the MCC mission and values and the mission of the Thrift Shop in a positive manner to donors, volunteers and customers.
\n
- Demonstrate positive attitude, integrity and honesty.
\n
- Demonstrate enthusiasm about working with a variety of people, both volunteers and customers, and acknowledging the \"customer comes first\" approach.
\n
- Communicate clearly and accurately to ensure effective store operations.
\n
- Help to sustain a clean and properly merchandised store appearance.
\n
- Adapt to feedback and opportunities for improvement.
\n
- Develop and display knowledge of all products and MCC's mission statement.
\n
- Assist in the daily operation of the shop including:\n
- Sort, tag, price and put out donations,
\n
- Assist and support customers,
\n
- Assist and support volunteers,
\n
- Operate the cash register
