ABOUT THE POSITION:
The Curatorial Assistant will work directly with the museum collection under the guidance of the Manager/Curator. They will identify collection objects, confirm artefact information on the computerized collection database, research artefact details, digitally photograph objects and ensure that the digital records conform to the standards set in the Westmorland Historical Society collections mandate. They will help respond to information requests and assist genealogy researchers as needed. The successful candidate will use their knowledge about the collection to support the work of the interpretive staff. They will also perform other functions in support of curatorial and conservation activities.
The Curatorial Assistant will also assist museum visitors and lead guided tours as needed. Alongside other museum employees they are responsible for daily admissions, tracking visitor statistics, processing gift shop sales, and work with other museum staff to maintain the security, cleanliness, and landscaping of the site. They contribute to special events held at the museum and have the opportunity to learn specific skills related to museum operations in collaboration with their colleagues.
Other duties will include assisting visitors with admissions and in the gift shop, giving tours to groups and individuals, and various housekeeping and landscaping duties in and around the museum. There will be opportunities to develop new skills related to our history including weaving, rug hooking, hearth cooking, and gardening. The Curatorial Assistant may also research and devise an exhibition plan (time permitting) for the museum based on objects in the collection, at the discretion of the Manager / Curator.
QUALIFICATIONS:
The ideal candidate will be a post-secondary student enrolled in a related field or with an interest in local history (students of at least 16 years of age may also be considered for related positions in our organization). They will be a self-starter that can work with and without direct supervision. Previous experience working in a museum setting or proficiency in both official languages will be considered an asset. Good interpersonal skills and basic computer proficiencies are a must. Knowledge of textile arts may also be considered an asset.
Applicants must have their own reliable transportation to and from the place of work in Dorchester, N.B. and be willing to work weekends. The Westmorland Historical Society is an equal opportunity employer.
